Facebook has announced that it will ban users sharing video of President Trump encouraging an audience in North Carolina to vote twice in the upcoming presidential election, since it violates their policies concerning misinformation about voter fraud.
In a speech this week, Trump encouraged his audience in North Carolina to vote twice to “test” the US election process. However, voting twice in a US presidential election is illegal in the United States, and a felony in North Carolina.
That means people who followed Trump’s request could potentially find themselves in legal trouble.
Facebook will allow media reports about the video, and sharing the video while providing an accurate context will also be acceptable. However Facebook users that are supportive of Trump’s comments about voting twice, or share video of his comments without context are likely to see their posts removed.
Facebook said in a statement that “This video violates our policies prohibiting voter fraud and we will remove it unless it is shared to correct the record.”
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg also warned on Thursday of potential civil unrest as the election nears, and has said Facebook will not allow any political ads in the week before the election, and has said it would flag any attempt by either political party to prematurely claim victory before the election vote count shows a conclusive winner.
